We’re at a key inflection point in our industry.  There are a lot of things wrong with traditional ITSM guidance.  It’s old, and lacks an agile method to keep it up to date.  It’s proprietary and closed, so there’s little or no opportunity or reason for the vast majority of us to contribute to it. And it’s got lots of non-value-added price increases and red tape associated with it, because there is no alternative.

This leaves individuals and organizations, “rolling their own” practices, expending enormous amounts of time and energy and money extrapolating from decade-old guidance, and assembling practices from balkanized emerging practices like DevOps, Lean and Agile, with 100% assurance at the end of it that what they role doesn’t match the next guy’s.

This is a frustrating situation.  We need an alternative.

So, whether it makes sense or not, whether we’re exactly the right people or not, and knowing that what we start with isn’t perfect or a sure thing, we, and some like-minded people, are making an alternative happen.  We don’t have all the answers, knowledge or resources we need yet, but we’re betting that if we put something together that make sense, that puts the needs people in our profession first, instead of profits, we can win.

So here’s the deal.  We have founded The Open Service Management Alliance, It’s a 501(c)3 non-profit.  Our mission is to be a vehicle for open, community-driven best practices for service management.  We’ve create an Open Service Management (OSM, pronounced, “awesome”) Foundation body of knowledge and a syllabus, sample exams (2), and courseware.  We have an exam live at Acquiros.

Here’s our ask of you:

  1. We are looking for you to sign up and take the exam at acquiros.com, as it will help you get a feel for the content and provide a source of funding for our efforts.
  2. We are looking for you to contribute to the content, or whatever else you can help with, to help your fellow professional s. We really are. So bring your time and talents. If you don’t see something you’d like, or see something you don’t like, it’s because one thing is missing: y-o-u.
  3. We are looking for training partners.  If you’d like to provide training, the fee is nominal ($100 USD per year) and goes towards OSM development, promotion and operations.  You can sign up at https://www.acquiros.com/osma-application. There is no large accreditation red tape. The actual exam is available January 1, 2018, and will cost $150; again, profits for this go to OSM development, promotion and operations.  Also, note that exam takers (after the beta) will need to take training from an Authorized Training Organization in order to get an exam; this is a necessary source of funding.  BTW, if you look at the content and see it wanting in certain areas, that’s because it needs YOU. So let us know how you can help :).
  4. We could use your talents to help your fellow professionals.  Please sign up as a member of this site and let us know at [email protected] what you can do to help. This list of help we need is long.  If you have WordPress skills, want to be a forum moderator, or contribute content (best practices need fleshing out), or have skills at promotion / SEO / social, we sure could use your help.

To be perfectly honest, there really is no good reason for us to go through all of this trouble except to help our fellow professionals. I guess the same goes for you, too.  Why bother? Well, what if we could create a better tomorrow for all of us, with an agile (think GitHub) platform cranking out best practice guidance that fresh, relevant and open? Wouldn’t that be cool?

When’s the last time you really got excited about service management? Think about it.  Now is that time, again.  We can make this happen.
